He’d sustained the injury during rehearsals with partner Ricki Lake.
Two-time mirror-ball winner Julianne was back at DWTS for the first time in two years and performed with her Footloose co-star Kenny Wormald. Then, in tears, she had a fancy workout of flips to “Shake a Tail Feather” with her three-time-champion brother Derek for the first time since Season 8. Julianne tweeted: “There’s nobody I love dancing with more than my bro. It’s crazy how Derek and I danced for the first time after I had surgery, and how this time his shoulder was injured. But the show must go on.”
Meantime, ex-Caesars Palace headliner Cher, who was there to cheer on son Chaz Bono, flew to San Francisco yesterday for treatment for her back. Chaz , although in the bottom slots, was again safe for another week, and Cher promptly said she’d return for next week’s shows to keep the support high. “YEAH! CHAZ GETS 2 DANCE ANOTHER WK! THANK U,” Cher tweeted in all caps as the show ended. “DOES THIS MEAN IM ABOUT 2B CAST MEMBER OF DWTS? I MIGHT HAVE 1 MORE CAMEO UP MY SLEEVE.”
The movie week of DWTS saw singer Chynna Phillips and pro partner Tony Dovolani with the lowest scores kicked off after their disastrous Mission Impossible tango. Chynna, married to actor Billy Baldwin, said her mind went blank, and she forgot all her steps.
*Astronauts are set to step foot on Crystals in MGM’s CityCenter for a weeklong exhibit featuring artifacts from space missions. Starting tomorrow, an Apollo 10 spacesuit and Rover vehicles from Mars and a Lunar landing will be on display when Omega Speedmaster watches and Tourbillion open the presentation. The Speedmaster is the official timepiece for NASA and the only watch worn to the moon and back.
Next Thursday, Apollo 17 astronaut -- and the last man to walk on the moon -- Cpt. Gene Cernan will be joined by Gemini and Apollo astronaut Lt. Gen. Thomas Stafford to be honored at a reception to benefit cancer care and research at Nevada Cancer Institute. On Oct. 21, Apollo 15 astronaut Brig. Gen. Charlie Duke joins Gene and Thomas for a 90-minute panel discussion to be moderated by former CNN space correspondent Miles O’Brien.
*My actor pal Robert Davi started out his showbiz career as a singer awarded first place in the New York State School Music Association’s solo competitions. But he became well known for playing a drug lord in the 1989 James Bond film Licence to Kill that also starred Wayne Newton. He trained under opera great Tito Gobbi but damaged his vocal chords pushing too hard to be a tenor when he was baritone.
He went on to star in TV series and movies, including Wiseguy, Die Hard and Showgirls, but always wanted to get back to where he started. That dream came true when he recently went into a Hollywood recording studio with a 30-piece orchestra to record Frank Sinatra classics. His debut album Davi Sings Sinatra on the Road to Romance drops Oct. 24, and he’s set to headline the Venetian on Feb. 23 for three nights.
*For its 49 days of holiday festivities, the Venetian will place for the first time ever an ice skating rink on The Strip. (Truth be told, it’s made from environmentally friendly recyclable polymer, so no refrigeration and thus no electricity.) Guests will be able to glide hand-in-hand or make figure eights with their skates from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. The rink above the outdoor Grand Canal will include a 65-foot tree with 2,000 lights and 30 snowflakes lit nightly by a floating angel.
“Winter in Venice” starts Nov. 21 and runs through Jan. 8. Hotel execs promise warm apple cider on arrival to make winter feel like winter even though we’re in the desert. Next: Showbiz snow, please! The Venetian and Palazzo will be decked out in holiday ornaments, flowers, ice branches and fir trees.
*Star Chef Alex Stratta, who is a consultant at Marche Bacchus, has tapped his former Sous Chef David Middleton to lead his culinary team there. David replaces another Alex chef, Joe Swan, who is returning home to Ohio. Before Marche Bacchus, David was on the opening team at Scarpetta in Cosmopolitan after working with Alex at his recently shuttered Alex in the Wynn. David also was sous chef at David Burke in the Venetian.
*MGM Grand has earmarked $160 million to remodel all 3,570 guest rooms and 642 suites in its main tower by next September. However, we’ll get the first look at the redesigned rooms, which will be completed by November. Scott Sibella, president of MGM Grand, promises that this is just one of the many changes he’s making at the “green giant” -- including nightlife additions and a Studio 54 makeover, plus changes to The Lion Habitat we tipped in Wicked Whispers & Racy Rumors.
Star Surveillance
NASCAR drivers Todd Bodine and Ron Hornaday watched Terry Fator’s show at the Mirage and met with Terry and wife Taylor Makakoa before the show. … Rapper Lupe Fiasco hosts the Izod IndyCar World Championships kickoff party tonight at Wet Republic in MGM Grand after a parade of 30-plus racecars and drivers on the shut-down Strip from Flamingo to Monte Carlo. Drivers competing in the weekend races also will make appearances tonight at Hard Rock Cafe on The Strip. Then tomorrow, drivers P.J. Chesson, Joey Coulter, Molly Saleen, Ricky Byers and others host the party there that includes a silent auction. Ricky, a two-time cancer survivor, is still racing and donates the money raised to cancer research. The party features a DJ set by Chris Vrenna of Nine Inch Nails and a performance by Fall in Vain.
